Is there a difference between paratransit and fixed-route service?
Yes. Paratransit service is often a door-to-door or shared ride option that has eligibility requirements for its riders. Fixed-route service is an open bus system that allows all members of a community to board the vehicle at spots along a pre-determined route.
Who is eligible for paratransit?
The guidelines can be quite complex, but it usually is open to individuals with a physician-verified disability who live outside reasonable distance or cannot reasonably access the nearest fixed-route service stop. Please call The Mobility Hotline at 1-866-507-4857 (toll-free) or 215-699-1801 to determine if you are eligible for paratransit service and what provider services your neighborhood.
Is there a discount for riders with disabilities?
Yes, but the amounts and conditions vary. SEPTA riders with disabilities must pay full fare if riding buses, subways or trolleys between7:00-8:00 a.m. and 4:30-5:30 p.m. For regional rail lines, full fare must be paid on trains arriving in Center City between 7:00-8:00 a.m. and trains departing Center City from 4:30-5:30 p.m.
Pottstown Area Rapid Transit charges 75 cents except during peak service hours (7:00-8:00 a.m. and 4:30-5:30 p.m.)
The Community Coaster is $1.00 during all hours of operation.
Do I need to know how to operate a bus lift?
No. Public transit drivers are specially trained on how to operate the special features on the bus. He /she will also help you to board the vehicle and secure your chair or seatbelt as the vehicle cannot move until you are properly secured.
Please note that drivers are not required to help you with bags, packages or other non-medical items.
Do companions pay if riding?
Most systems do not charge a companion fare, but you will need to get documentation from the specific transit provider before attempting to board.
Are service animals allowed on public transit?
Yes, but they must remain in full control of the owner at all times. An animal may sit on an adjoining seat only if there is not a passenger standing.
How do I know I am boarding/getting off at correct location?
There are several ways to ensure you arrive safely at your destination. First, be sure to ask the driver if he/she is going to your destination. If so, ask the driver to please announce the stop. Many buses also have automated announcements that tell the exact location of the bus as it moves along the route. And, stop assistance cards (available from the provider) also alert the driver to when you want to exit the bus.
Is there travel training available?
Yes. The Partnership TMA offers travel-training for individuals and groups. Instruction covers safe travel tips, how to read a bus or train schedule, different types of fare payment and a short field trip. Please call The Mobility Hotline at 1-866-507-4857 to discuss fees and availability.
How can I get the cheapest fare on SEPTA?
There are several ways:
--if you have a card for persons with disabilities (usually orange or green), be sure to show the driver or ticket agent. The cards are NOT valid during peak hours (7:00am-8:00am and 4:30pm-5:30pm)
--always buy your tickets at ticket counters or online at www.septa.org. to avoid a costly surcharge of up to $3.00 each way!
--if traveling frequently, consider purchasing tokens or a weekly or monthly pass. They all offer substantial savings over paying day-to-day.
